**Did John Wesley Believe “Once Saved Always Saved”?

The doctrine of “once saved always saved” claims that a person, once born again, can never lose salvation — no matter what they later believe, do, deny, or choose.
This article answers:

SECTION 1 — DID JOHN WESLEY BELIEVE IN “ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED”?
Short Answer:
** No — Wesley completely rejected “once saved always saved.”
John Wesley taught:
“A true believer may make shipwreck of faith.”
“It is possible for a believer to fall from grace.”
He insisted that salvation is:

through faith,

kept by continuing faith,

and faith can be overthrown.
This matches the plain meaning of KJV Scriptures.
SECTION 2 — WHAT KJV SCRIPTURE SAYS ABOUT FALLING AWAY
John Wesley rejected eternal security because the Bible itself rejects it.
Here are the passages he relied on:
1. Believers can “depart from the living God” (Hebrews 3:12)
“Take heed, BRETHREN, lest there be in ANY of you
an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.”
Written to believers (“brethren”), warning they can “depart.”
2. Believers must “continue in the faith” to remain saved (Colossians 1:22–23)
“To present you holy…
IF ye continue in the faith grounded and settled,
and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel.”
Salvation is conditioned on continuing, not just beginning.
3. Even Paul feared becoming a “castaway” (1 Corinthians 9:27)
“Lest that by any means… I myself should be a castaway.”
Why fear being cast away… if being cast away is impossible?
4. Believers can “fall from grace” (Galatians 5:4)
“Ye are fallen from grace.”
This cannot refer to unbelievers; unbelievers were never IN grace.
5. Believers can “draw back unto perdition” (Hebrews 10:38–39)
“If any man draw back,
my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition…”
Perdition = destruction, ruin, eternal loss.
You cannot “draw back” from somewhere you never were.
6. The branch “IN ME” can be cut off (John 15:1–6)
“Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away…
If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch…
and they are burned.”
Jesus describes:

A branch in Him (saved)
-
That does not continue
-
Is cut off
-
And cast into the fire
Clear. Unavoidable.
7. Names CAN be blotted out of the Book of Life (Revelation 3:5)
“He that overcometh…
I will not blot out his name out of the book of life.”
The warning is the proof.
If it were impossible, Jesus would not promise to “NOT” blot out a name.
SECTION 3 — WHAT GETS YOUR NAME BLOTTED OUT? (KJV)
Wesley and Scripture agree that certain actions, choices, and attitudes can lead to losing salvation.
Here are the primary biblical reasons:
1. Persistent, Willful Sin (Hebrews 10:26–27)
“For IF we sin willfully…
there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
but a certain fearful looking for of judgment…”
2. Departing from God through unbelief (Hebrews 3:12)
“An evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God.”
Not accidental doubts —
willful rejection of faith.
3. Drawing back (Hebrews 10:38)
“If any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.”
4. Denying Christ (Matthew 10:33)
“Whosoever shall deny me before men,
him will I also deny…”
5. Refusing to abide in Christ (John 15:6)
“If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth…”
6. Returning to filth/sin without repentance (2 Peter 2:20–22)
“The latter end is worse with them than the beginning.”
SECTION 4 — WHAT WOULD JOHN WESLEY SAY TO CHRISTIANS ABOUT THE WARNING PASSAGES?
Wesley would say exactly what the Bible says:
A. Salvation is a gift — but must be kept by living faith.
He preached “continued believing,” not one-time praying.
B. God does not force anyone to stay saved.
Believers can walk away.
C. The Book of Life warnings are real.
Not symbolic, not empty threats.
D. Holiness matters.
Not perfection —
but no willful rebellion.
E. Salvation is secure ONLY in abiding in Christ.
Not in a past moment,
but in an ongoing relationship.
