ME BEATING LEGALISTIC SWORDS INTO PLOWSHARES

Eagle-Eye Legalism, Weaponized Bible Authority, and Abiding Relationship Theology

ISAIAH 2:4 KJV

“And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”

A sword is a serious object.

A sword can attack.

A sword can slice.

A sword can pierce.

A sword can sever.

A sword can kill.

A sword can destroy.

And a sword can leave permanent wounds.

That is important when we study the Bible because Scripture uses the word sword both literally and symbolically.

There were real swords in the Bible. There were wars, armies, governments, enemies, battles, violence and death.

But the Bible also uses the sword as a picture of something that divides, penetrates, exposes, judges or wounds.

And that brings us to something very important for the modern Christian Church:

WORDS can also become swords.

Religious words can attack.

Accusations can slice a person apart.

False judgment can destroy a reputation.

Religious control can sever relationships.

Harsh Bible teaching can pierce somebody’s spirit.

And some wounds caused by religious words can remain for decades.

The issue is not the Bible.

The issue is how human beings use the Bible.

JESUS SAID, “I CAME NOT TO SEND PEACE, BUT A SWORD”

MATTHEW 10:34 KJV

“Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.”

Jesus was NOT telling His followers to become violent.

He was not teaching Christians to physically attack anybody.

He was not authorizing religious warfare.

He was describing the dividing effect of truth.

Read the surrounding passage.

Jesus goes immediately into division within families and relationships.

Following Christ can sometimes force people to make choices.

Truth may divide.

Conviction may divide.

Different beliefs may divide.

Different loyalties may divide.

Luke makes the meaning even clearer.

LUKE 12:51 KJV

“Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division.”

Matthew calls it a sword.

Luke calls it division.

Therefore Jesus’ sword in this passage does not mean, “Go hurt somebody.”

It means that truth can produce a dividing line.

JESUS ALSO SAID TO PUT THE SWORD AWAY

When Peter used a literal sword to defend Jesus, Christ stopped him.

MATTHEW 26:52 KJV

“Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.”

And Jesus said:

JOHN 18:36 KJV

“My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight…”

Therefore we cannot use Jesus’ statement, “I came not to send peace, but a sword,” as permission for violence, cruelty, intimidation or religious aggression.

Christ’s Kingdom is not advanced by physically overpowering people.

And I would add:

Neither should it be advanced by verbally butchering them.

THE WORD OF GOD IS CALLED A SWORD

EPHESIANS 6:17 KJV

“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

The Bible is called the sword of the Spirit.

But notice something.

It is the sword of the Spirit.

Not the sword of our ego.

Not the sword of our denomination.

Not the sword of our personal bias.

Not the sword of our ministry control.

Not the sword of our anger.

Not the sword of our suspicion.

And not the sword of our private need to be right.

Hebrews says:

HEBREWS 4:12 KJV

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit… and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

The Word pierces.

But notice where it ultimately goes.

The heart.

The Word of God should first search ME.

Before I use a Scripture to diagnose somebody else, perhaps I should allow that Scripture to examine me.

WORDS CAN BECOME SWORDS

The Bible itself makes this comparison.

PROVERBS 12:18 KJV

“There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.”

That is remarkably direct.

Some people speak like swords.

Their words pierce.

Their words wound.

Their words accuse.

Their words divide.

Their words cut people apart.

But notice the contrast:

“The tongue of the wise is health.”

The wise person may still tell the truth.

The wise person may still correct.

The wise person may still disagree.

The wise person may still confront something that is wrong.

But wisdom does not require cruelty.

Truth does not require humiliation.

Correction does not require dehumanization.

Authority does not require domination.

WEAPONIZING THE AUTHORITY OF THE BIBLE

This is where Christian ministry can become dangerous.

The Bible has authority.

But a human being can weaponize biblical authority.

There is a major difference.

A person can quote a TRUE Bible verse and still use that verse in a FALSE way.

A verse can be taken out of context.

A verse can be applied to the wrong person.

A verse can be used without knowing the facts.

A verse can be used to intimidate.

A verse can be used to shame.

A verse can be used to control.

A verse can be used to accuse somebody whom the speaker has never even bothered to know.

The Scripture may be true.

But the application may be false.

That distinction matters.

EAGLE-EYE LEGALISM

I call another part of this:

EAGLE-EYE LEGALISM.

Eagle-eye legalism has extraordinarily sharp eyesight when looking at everybody else.

It scans.

It watches.

It evaluates.

It notices.

It suspects.

It categorizes.

It looks for somebody else’s mistake.

Somebody else’s clothing.

Somebody else’s doctrine.

Somebody else’s marriage.

Somebody else’s ministry style.

Somebody else’s personality.

Somebody else’s worship.

Somebody else’s perceived failure.

But Jesus addressed this tendency very directly.

MATTHEW 7:3 KJV

“And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?”

Jesus did not abolish discernment.

He confronted hypocritical judgment.

There is a difference.

Eagle-eye legalism can detect a tiny speck in somebody else while remaining amazingly unconcerned about the telephone pole sticking out of its own eye.

Jesus also said:

MATTHEW 23:24 KJV

“Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.”

That is another picture of disproportionate religion.

Magnify the tiny thing.

Ignore the huge thing.

Police the external.

Ignore the heart.

Major on the minor.

And sometimes ignore justice, mercy, faith, humility, honesty and love.

LEGALISM ACCUSES RATHER THAN RELATES

This is one of my major concerns.

Legalism often does not discuss.

It does not inquire.

It does not ask.

It does not reason.

It does not relate.

It accuses.

The Old Testament is inspired Scripture. We need it. We study it. We learn from it.

But Christians are not ancient Israel living under the Mosaic covenant.

We must understand Scripture through the completed work of Christ and the New Testament covenant.

When Christians drag Old Testament law, punishment and religious control into New Testament relationships without understanding covenant and context, they can produce a form of religious accusation that Christ never assigned to them.

A.R.T. — ABIDING RELATIONSHIP THEOLOGY

This brings me to what I call:

A.R.T. — ABIDING RELATIONSHIP THEOLOGY.

How do we relate to God?

How do we relate to other Christians?

How do leaders relate to people?

How do Christians behave toward the wider population?

How do we tell the truth without becoming controlling?

How do we maintain biblical standards without becoming Pharisaical?

How do we discern without becoming suspicious?

How do we correct without becoming abusive?

How do we use Scripture without turning it into a weapon?

That is A.R.T.

The goal is not watered-down Christianity.

The goal is mature Christianity.

THE NEW TESTAMENT GOAL IS RESTORATION

GALATIANS 6:1 KJV

“Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.”

Notice three things.

RESTORE.

MEEKNESS.

CONSIDER THYSELF.

That is almost the exact opposite of eagle-eye legalism.

Paul does not say:

Spot the sinner.

Broadcast the sinner.

Humiliate the sinner.

Create a label for the sinner.

Make yourself look spiritual by exposing the sinner.

He says:

RESTORE.

And do it while considering yourself.

That is mature Christianity.

BE A NOBLE BEREAN

I am not asking anybody to blindly accept my teaching either.

ACTS 17:11 KJV

“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

The Bereans examined Paul.

Think about that.

They were allowed to examine the teaching of an apostle.

So please examine mine.

Do not swallow everybody’s Kool-Aid.

Not mine.

Not television ministry Kool-Aid.

Not famous preacher Kool-Aid.

Not denominational Kool-Aid.

Not internet prophet Kool-Aid.

Not Christian celebrity Kool-Aid.

Search the Scriptures.

Pray.

Think.

Ask questions.

Know God for yourself.

WORK OUT YOUR OWN SALVATION

PHILIPPIANS 2:12 KJV

“…work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.”

Male.

Female.

Black.

White.

Brown.

Leader.

Layperson.

Church member.

Person who has no church.

Person who leads one church.

Person who leads hundreds.

There remains an individual responsibility before God.

No human leader can hear God for you in every matter.

No denomination replaces your conscience.

No apostle replaces your Bible.

No prophet replaces the Holy Spirit.

No pastor replaces your personal responsibility before God.

And neither does AI.

BEATING LEGALISTIC SWORDS INTO PLOWSHARES

Isaiah describes something beautiful.

The weapon is transformed.

The sword is not merely discarded.

It is remade.

Something designed to cut becomes something designed to cultivate.

Something designed for destruction becomes useful for producing life.

That gives us a powerful ministry application.

Take the serious Bible knowledge.

Keep it.

Take the conviction.

Keep it.

Take sound doctrine.

Keep it.

Take discernment.

Keep it.

Take biblical authority.

Keep it.

But beat the weaponized version into a plowshare.

Use truth to cultivate.

Use Scripture to teach.

Use discernment wisely.

Use correction to restore.

Use authority to serve.

Use knowledge to produce maturity.

Use the Bible to bring people closer to God rather than merely giving Christians another weapon with which to cut one another apart.

THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH

And I close with this balancing Scripture:

JOHN 16:13 KJV

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth…”

We are not being asked to abandon truth.

We are being asked to follow the Spirit of Truth.

Truth can be strong without being cruel.

Correction can be direct without being abusive.

Discernment can be accurate without becoming suspicious.

Biblical authority can remain authoritative without becoming authoritarian.

And Christian ministry can carry a sword of the Spirit without turning fellow human beings into targets.

Beat the legalistic swords into plowshares.

Cultivate.

Restore.

Teach.

Reason.

Discern.

Tell the truth.

And let the Word of God first search us.
