A First Church Doctrinal Study \u2014 with New Testament Greek<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is a phrase heard frequently in modern Christian ministry:<\/p>\n

\u201cWho is your covering?\u201d<\/strong>
\u201cEvery woman needs to be under a spiritual covering.\u201d<\/strong>
\u201cYou cannot minister unless you are covered by a pastor or apostle.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The question is not whether Christians need fellowship, accountability, pastors, elders, wise counsel, correction, or healthy spiritual relationships.<\/strong> The New Testament teaches all of those.<\/p>\n

The question is much narrower:<\/p>\n

Did Jesus, Paul, Peter, or the First Church teach that a Christian must be \u201cunder\u201d another human being as his or her spiritual covering in order to be spiritually legitimate, protected, authorized, or safe?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I find no New Testament command stating that doctrine. Even sources that strongly affirm pastoral authority acknowledge that Scripture does not explicitly teach a separate \u201ccovering doctrine\u201d in that sense.<\/p>\n

And this distinction matters.<\/p>\n

1. WHAT IS THE BELIEVER’S SPIRITUAL COVERING?<\/h2>\n

The New Testament repeatedly directs the believer toward Christ Himself.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Colossians 1:18 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd he is the head of the body, the church…\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Colossians 2:10 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

1 Timothy 2:5 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFor there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The First Church did not teach that a pastor, apostle, bishop, husband, prophet, or ministry organization becomes an additional mediator between a believer and God.<\/p>\n

Christ is Head.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Christ is Mediator.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Christ is Chief Shepherd.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Human leaders serve under the Chief Shepherd.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2. THE BEAUTIFUL BIBLICAL IDEA OF \u201cCOVERING\u201d: GOD’S LOVE<\/h2>\n

If we want to speak biblically and relationally about a covering, there is a beautiful one:<\/p>\n

God’s love covers.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

1 Peter 4:8 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity(His love) shall cover the multitude of sins.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Greek:<\/p>\n

Love.<\/p>\n

To cover, conceal, veil.<\/p>\n

Peter is not describing an organizational hierarchy.<\/p>\n

He is describing fervent love among believers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Compare:<\/p>\n

Proverbs 10:12 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

This kind of covering does not mean hiding abuse, crime, corruption, or refusing biblical correction.<\/p>\n

It means that godly love does not delight in exposing, humiliating, gossiping about, or publicly shaming another person.<\/strong><\/p>\n

First Church covering looks remarkably relational:<\/p>\n

Love covers.
Grace restores.
Truth corrects.
Christ saves.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That is very different from:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou must come under me so that I can cover you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

3. BUT DOESN’T HEBREWS 13:17 SAY \u201cOBEY THEM\u201d?<\/h2>\n

Yes.<\/p>\n

And we should not erase it.<\/p>\n

Hebrews 13:17 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cObey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls…\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

But notice what the verse does not<\/strong> say:<\/p>\n

It does not use the expression \u201cspiritual covering.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

It does not say a minister mediates between you and God.<\/p>\n

And the Greek deserves careful attention.<\/p>\n

\u201cObey\u201d \u2014 \u03c0\u03b5\u03af\u03b8\u03c9 (peith\u014d<\/em>)<\/span><\/h3>\n

The word carries the idea of persuasion, confidence, trust, being convinced or persuaded.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This does not make leadership meaningless. Hebrews clearly expects Christians to take their spiritual leaders seriously.<\/p>\n

But neither should peith\u014d<\/em> automatically be expanded into:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatever your leader commands, you must obey.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThem that have the rule\u201d \u2014 \u1f21\u03b3\u03ad\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 (h\u0113geomai<\/em>)<\/span><\/h3>\n

It can describe one who leads, guides, or goes before.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Interestingly, the Greek word exousia<\/strong>\u2014the ordinary New Testament noun for authority\u2014is not present in Hebrews 13:17. Scholars therefore caution against inserting an unlimited concept of hierarchical authority into the verse.<\/p>\n

There is legitimate leadership.<\/p>\n

There is legitimate submission.<\/p>\n

But that is not automatically the same doctrine as \u201cspiritual covering.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

4. PETER PUTS A BOUNDARY AROUND PASTORAL AUTHORITY<\/h1>\n

Peter himself was an apostle.<\/p>\n

Yet look at what he tells church elders.<\/p>\n

1 Peter 5:2\u20133 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFeed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof…<\/strong>
Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

The important Greek word is:<\/p>\n

\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9 \u2014 katakurieu\u014d<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

It means to exercise lordship or dominion over another.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Peter therefore teaches both sides:<\/p>\n

YES \u2014 oversight.<\/strong><\/p>\n

NO \u2014 lordship over God’s people.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The elder shepherds.<\/p>\n

The elder watches.<\/p>\n

The elder teaches.<\/p>\n

The elder models.<\/p>\n

But the flock remains God’s flock.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Peter’s model of eldership explicitly contrasts shepherding with \u201clording it over\u201d those entrusted to the elders.<\/p>\n

5. JESUS HAD ALREADY DRAWN THAT LINE<\/h1>\n

Matthew 20:25\u201326 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYe know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them…<\/strong>
But it shall not be so among you…\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Again the Greek includes:<\/p>\n

\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03ba\u03c5\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5\u03cd\u03c9 \u2014 katakurieu\u014d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jesus contrasted Kingdom leadership with worldly domination.<\/p>\n

Christian authority therefore cannot simply copy a pyramid:<\/p>\n

Powerful person
\u2193
less powerful person
\u2193
less powerful person
\u2193
woman\/member\/follower<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jesus says:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt shall not be so among you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kingdom leadership is servant leadership.<\/p>\n

6. PAUL DID NOT CLAIM OWNERSHIP OF ANOTHER PERSON’S FAITH<\/h1>\n

This may be one of the clearest First Church safeguards:<\/p>\n

2 Corinthians 1:24 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cNot for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Think about that.<\/p>\n

This is Paul the Apostle.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yet Paul refuses to describe his ministry as having dominion over another Christian’s faith.<\/p>\n

His apostolic authority was real.<\/p>\n

His teaching authority was real.<\/p>\n

His correction could be very strong.<\/p>\n

But:<\/p>\n

Authority did not equal ownership.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

7. WHAT ABOUT A WOMAN?<\/h1>\n

There is no New Testament verse stating:<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery Christian woman must have a male spiritual covering.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nor is there a verse saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cAn unmarried woman must find a male pastor\/apostle to cover her.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nor:<\/p>\n

\u201cA woman cannot minister unless a man spiritually covers her ministry.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Those statements should therefore not be presented as direct Bible quotations or explicit First Church doctrine.<\/p>\n

The New Testament actually records women praying and prophesying<\/strong> in the gathered Christian community in 1 Corinthians 11.<\/p>\n

The controversial passage about women’s physical head covering uses Greek terms concerning a literal\/visible covering and exousia<\/strong> (\u201cauthority\u201d) in verse 10. The precise meaning of that verse has long been disputed\u2014even interpreters disagree whether the authority represented belongs to another or describes authority associated with the woman herself.<\/p>\n

Whatever interpretation one takes concerning 1 Corinthians 11 and head coverings<\/strong>, it should not silently be converted into a different doctrine:<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery Christian woman requires a human spiritual covering.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

That sentence simply isn’t in the passage.<\/p>\n

8. FIRST CHURCH ACCOUNTABILITY WAS REAL<\/h1>\n

Rejecting a modern \u201ccovering\u201d formula does not<\/strong> mean:<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody can tell me anything.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

That would be another error.<\/p>\n

The First Church practiced:<\/p>\n

Mutual submission \u2014 Ephesians 5:21<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cSubmitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Restorative correction \u2014 Galatians 6:1<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cRestore such an one in the spirit of meekness…<\/strong>\u201d<\/strong>(MEANS privately, calmly face to face, , with respect)<\/em><\/p>\n

Private confrontation \u2014 Matthew 18:15 <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cGo and tell him his fault between thee and him alone…<\/strong>\u201d(MEANS privately one to one face to face tocalmly, with respect, but if you are scared, then Matthew 18:16 says to “Take somebody with you”<\/em><\/p>\n

Testing spiritual claims \u2014 1 Thessalonians 5:21<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cProve all things; hold fast that which is good.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Personal responsibility \u2014 Philippians 2:12 <\/strong>(this is for males, females, all races, sizes and beliefs)<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWork out your own salvation with fear and trembling.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Therefore biblical Christianity is neither spiritual independence<\/strong> nor spiritual ownership.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is Abiding Relationship Theology.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

9. THE FIRST CHURCH MODEL<\/h1>\n

Perhaps the distinction can be stated very simply:<\/p>\n

Biblical shepherding is not spiritual ownership.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

A mature Christian should welcome godly counsel.<\/p>\n

A pastor should watch for souls.<\/p>\n

An elder should shepherd.<\/p>\n

A teacher should teach.<\/p>\n

A prophet should be judged.<\/p>\n

A Christian should remain teachable.<\/p>\n

Believers should submit to one another in the fear of God.<\/p>\n

But Jesus Christ remains the Head.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And nobody gets to replace Him.<\/p>\n

THE \u201cCOVERING\u201d MYTH IN ONE SENTENCE<\/h1>\n

The New Testament teaches spiritual leadership, fellowship, accountability, mutual submission and pastoral oversight\u2014but it never commands every Christian, or every Christian woman, to acquire a human \u201cspiritual covering\u201d who stands between that believer and God.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The safest covering language I find is much more beautiful:<\/p>\n

GOD’S LOVE COVERS.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

1 Peter 4:8<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFor God’s love shall cover the multitude of sins.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not control.<\/p>\n

Not possession.<\/p>\n

Not fear.<\/p>\n

Not, \u201cYou cannot hear God unless you come through me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Rather:<\/p>\n

Christ over His Church.
Shepherds serving His flock.
Believers walking in the light.
Truth spoken in love.
Mutual submission.
And fervent love covering one another.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That resembles the First Church.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Very First Church was not without authority.<\/strong> It was not leaderless, disorderly, independent, or \u201cevery person for themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

There were apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, teachers, elders and other ministry functions.<\/strong> There was correction. There was church order. There was discernment. There were boundaries. There was accountability. Leaders were recognized, respected and responsible before God.<\/p>\n

But authority is not the same thing as one human being becoming another Christian’s \u201cspiritual covering.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The First Church practiced fellowship rather than ownership, enslavement, treating persons like ministry property or using control, for it’s about <\/strong>\u00a0relationship rather than religious possession of a persons spirit, mind, body.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And Paul gives us an important relational safeguard:<\/p>\n

REPEAT: PAULINE SUBMISSION \u2014 EPHESIANS 5:21<\/h2>\n

This principle applies across the Body of Christ\u2014not merely downward from a layperson to a pastor, a woman to a man, or a younger minister to a senior minister.<\/p>\n

apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, elders, lay believers, husbands and wives.<\/strong><\/p>\n

No Big I’s and little you’s.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Office does not erase personal boundaries. Leadership does not eliminate another believer’s responsibility to discern. Submission does not mean subservience. And biblical authority does not make one Christian the spiritual owner of another.<\/p>\n

Your earlier teaching was already developing this distinction: you described a need for genuine spiritual authority while specifically opposing bullying and \u201cexcessive authoritarian behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n

SO WHAT WAS THE \u201cCOVERING?\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In Taveau’s terminology:<\/p>\n

PRAYER COVERING.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Fellow ministers.
Trusted friends.
\nSignificant prayer warriors, intercessory non accusing groups
Other Spirit Sent members of Christ’s Body.<\/p>\n

And equally:<\/p>\n

Whose back are YOU watching in prayer? (this is not “minding their business”(though that DOES occur..)\u00a0 but out of caring concerning and Christ”s love)<\/strong><\/p>\n

That is not top-down possession.<\/p>\n

It is Body ministry.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is relationship.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is mutuality.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is Pauline submission.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is Ephesians 5:21.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And over everybody\u2014apostle, elder, pastor, husband, wife, woman, man and layperson alike\u2014remains Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church.’<\/strong><\/p>\n

PRAYER COVERING AND AUTHORITY<\/h2>\n

The original verse isn’t specifically giving a teaching about Christian \u201cprayer covering.\u201d So we shouldn’t pretend that it is.<\/p>\n

But we can use its picture as an analogy<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

There is strength in not standing alone.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Imagine you’re going through something really difficult.<\/p>\n

You pray.<\/p>\n

But then you invite Mom and Sister and other family persons to\u00a0 pray.<\/p>\n

Then you may have Dad is praying, Granpa.<\/p>\n

Your pastor might be asked to\u00a0 pray.<\/p>\n

Your ministry friend (as many as you feel God tells you to get)<\/p>\n

Your grandmother, auntie and more, certain healthy mature prayer groups are\u00a0 praying.<\/p>\n

You and. a friend or friends,\u00a0 text back and forth:<\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve got your back. I’m praying.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

That’s what we’re calling getting enough protective PRAYER COVERING<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It doesn’t mean those people own you.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It means they stand with you.<\/strong><\/p>\n
