<\/h1>\nME BEATING LEGALISTIC SWORDS INTO PLOWSHARES<\/h1>\nEagle-Eye Legalism, Weaponized Bible Authority, and Abiding Relationship Theology<\/h3>\n
<\/h1>\n<\/h1>\n<\/h1>\nBy Taveau D\u2019Arcy ISAIAH 2:4 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cAnd he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.\u201d<\/p>\n A sword is a serious object.<\/p>\n A sword can attack.<\/p>\n A sword can slice.<\/p>\n A sword can pierce.<\/p>\n A sword can sever.<\/p>\n A sword can kill.<\/p>\n A sword can destroy.<\/p>\n And a sword can leave permanent wounds.<\/p>\n That is important when we study the Bible because Scripture uses the word sword<\/strong> both literally and symbolically.<\/p>\n There were real swords in the Bible. There were wars, armies, governments, enemies, battles, violence and death.<\/p>\n But the Bible also uses the sword as a picture of something that divides, penetrates, exposes, judges or wounds.<\/strong><\/p>\n And that brings us to something very important for the modern Christian Church:<\/p>\n WORDS can also become swords.<\/strong><\/p>\n Religious words can attack.<\/p>\n Accusations can slice a person apart.<\/p>\n False judgment can destroy a reputation.<\/p>\n Religious control can sever relationships.<\/p>\n Harsh Bible teaching can pierce somebody\u2019s spirit.<\/p>\n And some wounds caused by religious words can remain for decades.<\/p>\n The issue is not the Bible.<\/p>\n The issue is how human beings use the Bible.<\/strong><\/p>\n MATTHEW 10:34 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cThink not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.\u201d<\/p>\n Jesus was NOT telling His followers to become violent.<\/p>\n He was not teaching Christians to physically attack anybody.<\/p>\n He was not authorizing religious warfare.<\/p>\n He was describing the dividing effect of truth.<\/strong><\/p>\n Read the surrounding passage.<\/p>\n Jesus goes immediately into division within families and relationships.<\/p>\n Following Christ can sometimes force people to make choices.<\/p>\n Truth may divide.<\/p>\n Conviction may divide.<\/p>\n Different beliefs may divide.<\/p>\n Different loyalties may divide.<\/p>\n Luke makes the meaning even clearer.<\/p>\n LUKE 12:51 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cSuppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division.\u201d<\/p>\n Matthew calls it a sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n Luke calls it division.<\/strong><\/p>\n Therefore Jesus\u2019 sword in this passage does not mean, \u201cGo hurt somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n It means that truth can produce a dividing line.<\/p>\n When Peter used a literal sword to defend Jesus, Christ stopped him.<\/p>\n MATTHEW 26:52 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cThen said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.\u201d<\/p>\n And Jesus said:<\/p>\n JOHN 18:36 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cMy kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n Therefore we cannot use Jesus\u2019 statement, \u201cI came not to send peace, but a sword,\u201d as permission for violence, cruelty, intimidation or religious aggression.<\/p>\n Christ\u2019s Kingdom is not advanced by physically overpowering people.<\/p>\n And I would add:<\/p>\n Neither should it be advanced by verbally butchering them.<\/strong><\/p>\n EPHESIANS 6:17 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cAnd take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.\u201d<\/p>\n The Bible is called the sword of the Spirit.<\/strong><\/p>\n But notice something.<\/p>\n It is the sword of the Spirit.<\/strong><\/p>\n Not the sword of our ego.<\/p>\n Not the sword of our denomination.<\/p>\n Not the sword of our personal bias.<\/p>\n Not the sword of our ministry control.<\/p>\n Not the sword of our anger.<\/p>\n Not the sword of our suspicion.<\/p>\n And not the sword of our private need to be right.<\/p>\n Hebrews says:<\/p>\n HEBREWS 4:12 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cFor the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit\u2026 and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.\u201d<\/p>\n The Word pierces.<\/p>\n But notice where it ultimately goes.<\/p>\n The heart.<\/strong><\/p>\n The Word of God should first search ME.<\/strong><\/p>\n Before I use a Scripture to diagnose somebody else, perhaps I should allow that Scripture to examine me.<\/p>\n The Bible itself makes this comparison.<\/p>\n PROVERBS 12:18 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cThere is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.\u201d<\/p>\n That is remarkably direct.<\/p>\n Some people speak like swords.<\/strong><\/p>\n Their words pierce.<\/p>\n Their words wound.<\/p>\n Their words accuse.<\/p>\n Their words divide.<\/p>\n Their words cut people apart.<\/p>\n But notice the contrast:<\/p>\n \u201cThe tongue of the wise is health.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n The wise person may still tell the truth.<\/p>\n The wise person may still correct.<\/p>\n The wise person may still disagree.<\/p>\n The wise person may still confront something that is wrong.<\/p>\n But wisdom does not require cruelty.<\/p>\n Truth does not require humiliation.<\/p>\n Correction does not require dehumanization.<\/p>\n Authority does not require domination.<\/p>\n This is where Christian ministry can become dangerous.<\/p>\n The Bible has authority.<\/p>\n But a human being can weaponize biblical authority.<\/strong><\/p>\n There is a major difference.<\/p>\n A person can quote a TRUE Bible verse and still use that verse in a FALSE way.<\/p>\n A verse can be taken out of context.<\/p>\n A verse can be applied to the wrong person.<\/p>\n A verse can be used without knowing the facts.<\/p>\n A verse can be used to intimidate.<\/p>\n A verse can be used to shame.<\/p>\n A verse can be used to control.<\/p>\n A verse can be used to accuse somebody whom the speaker has never even bothered to know.<\/p>\n The Scripture may be true.<\/p>\n But the application may be false.<\/strong><\/p>\n That distinction matters.<\/p>\n I call another part of this:<\/p>\n Eagle-eye legalism has extraordinarily sharp eyesight when looking at everybody else.<\/p>\n It scans.<\/p>\n It watches.<\/p>\n It evaluates.<\/p>\n It notices.<\/p>\n It suspects.<\/p>\n It categorizes.<\/p>\n It looks for somebody else\u2019s mistake.<\/p>\n Somebody else\u2019s clothing.<\/p>\n Somebody else\u2019s doctrine.<\/p>\n Somebody else\u2019s marriage.<\/p>\n Somebody else\u2019s ministry style.<\/p>\n Somebody else\u2019s personality.<\/p>\n Somebody else\u2019s worship.<\/p>\n Somebody else\u2019s perceived failure.<\/p>\n But Jesus addressed this tendency very directly.<\/p>\n MATTHEW 7:3 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cAnd why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother\u2019s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?\u201d<\/p>\n Jesus did not abolish discernment.<\/p>\n He confronted hypocritical judgment.<\/strong><\/p>\n There is a difference.<\/p>\n Eagle-eye legalism can detect a tiny speck in somebody else while remaining amazingly unconcerned about the telephone pole sticking out of its own eye.<\/p>\n Jesus also said:<\/p>\n MATTHEW 23:24 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cYe blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.\u201d<\/p>\n That is another picture of disproportionate religion.<\/p>\n Magnify the tiny thing.<\/p>\n Ignore the huge thing.<\/p>\n Police the external.<\/p>\n Ignore the heart.<\/p>\n Major on the minor.<\/p>\n And sometimes ignore justice, mercy, faith, humility, honesty and love.<\/p>\n This is one of my major concerns.<\/p>\n Legalism often does not discuss.<\/p>\n It does not inquire.<\/p>\n It does not ask.<\/p>\n It does not reason.<\/p>\n It does not relate.<\/p>\n It accuses.<\/strong><\/p>\n The Old Testament is inspired Scripture. We need it. We study it. We learn from it.<\/p>\n But Christians are not ancient Israel living under the Mosaic covenant.<\/p>\n We must understand Scripture through the completed work of Christ and the New Testament covenant.<\/p>\n When Christians drag Old Testament law, punishment and religious control into New Testament relationships without understanding covenant and context, they can produce a form of religious accusation that Christ never assigned to them.<\/p>\n This brings me to what I call:<\/p>\n How do we relate to God?<\/p>\n How do we relate to other Christians?<\/p>\n How do leaders relate to people?<\/p>\n How do Christians behave toward the wider population?<\/p>\n How do we tell the truth without becoming controlling?<\/p>\n How do we maintain biblical standards without becoming Pharisaical?<\/p>\n How do we discern without becoming suspicious?<\/p>\n How do we correct without becoming abusive?<\/p>\n How do we use Scripture without turning it into a weapon?<\/p>\n That is A.R.T.<\/p>\n The goal is not watered-down Christianity.<\/p>\n The goal is mature Christianity.<\/strong><\/p>\n GALATIANS 6:1 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cBrethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.\u201d<\/p>\n Notice three things.<\/p>\n RESTORE.<\/strong><\/p>\n MEEKNESS.<\/strong><\/p>\n CONSIDER THYSELF.<\/strong><\/p>\n That is almost the exact opposite of eagle-eye legalism.<\/p>\n Paul does not say:<\/p>\n Spot the sinner.<\/p>\n Broadcast the sinner.<\/p>\n Humiliate the sinner.<\/p>\n Create a label for the sinner.<\/p>\n Make yourself look spiritual by exposing the sinner.<\/p>\n He says:<\/p>\n RESTORE.<\/strong><\/p>\n And do it while considering yourself.<\/strong><\/p>\n That is mature Christianity.<\/p>\n I am not asking anybody to blindly accept my teaching either.<\/p>\n ACTS 17:11 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cThese were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.\u201d<\/p>\n The Bereans examined Paul.<\/p>\n Think about that.<\/p>\n They were allowed to examine the teaching of an apostle.<\/p>\n So please examine mine.<\/p>\n Do not swallow everybody\u2019s Kool-Aid.<\/p>\n Not mine.<\/p>\n Not television ministry Kool-Aid.<\/p>\n Not famous preacher Kool-Aid.<\/p>\n Not denominational Kool-Aid.<\/p>\n Not internet prophet Kool-Aid.<\/p>\n Not Christian celebrity Kool-Aid.<\/p>\n Search the Scriptures.<\/p>\n Pray.<\/p>\n Think.<\/p>\n Ask questions.<\/p>\n Know God for yourself.<\/p>\n PHILIPPIANS 2:12 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201c\u2026work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.\u201d<\/p>\n Male.<\/p>\n Female.<\/p>\n Black.<\/p>\n White.<\/p>\n Brown.<\/p>\n Leader.<\/p>\n Layperson.<\/p>\n Church member.<\/p>\n Person who has no church.<\/p>\n Person who leads one church.<\/p>\n Person who leads hundreds.<\/p>\n There remains an individual responsibility before God.<\/p>\n No human leader can hear God for you in every matter.<\/p>\n No denomination replaces your conscience.<\/p>\n No apostle replaces your Bible.<\/p>\n No prophet replaces the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n No pastor replaces your personal responsibility before God.<\/p>\n And neither does AI.<\/p>\n Isaiah describes something beautiful.<\/p>\n The weapon is transformed.<\/p>\n The sword is not merely discarded.<\/p>\n It is remade.<\/strong><\/p>\n Something designed to cut becomes something designed to cultivate.<\/p>\n Something designed for destruction becomes useful for producing life.<\/p>\n That gives us a powerful ministry application.<\/p>\n Take the serious Bible knowledge.<\/p>\n Keep it.<\/p>\n Take the conviction.<\/p>\n Keep it.<\/p>\n Take sound doctrine.<\/p>\n Keep it.<\/p>\n Take discernment.<\/p>\n Keep it.<\/p>\n Take biblical authority.<\/p>\n Keep it.<\/p>\n But beat the weaponized version<\/strong> into a plowshare.<\/p>\n Use truth to cultivate.<\/p>\n Use Scripture to teach.<\/p>\n Use discernment wisely.<\/p>\n Use correction to restore.<\/p>\n Use authority to serve.<\/p>\n Use knowledge to produce maturity.<\/p>\n Use the Bible to bring people closer to God rather than merely giving Christians another weapon with which to cut one another apart.<\/p>\n And I close with this balancing Scripture:<\/p>\n JOHN 16:13 KJV<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cHowbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n We are not being asked to abandon truth.<\/p>\n We are being asked to follow the Spirit of Truth.<\/strong><\/p>\n Truth can be strong without being cruel.<\/p>\n Correction can be direct without being abusive.<\/p>\n Discernment can be accurate without becoming suspicious.<\/p>\n Biblical authority can remain authoritative without becoming authoritarian.<\/p>\n And Christian ministry can carry a sword of the Spirit without turning fellow human beings into targets.<\/p>\n Beat the legalistic swords into plowshares.<\/strong><\/p>\n Cultivate.<\/p>\n Restore.<\/p>\n Teach.<\/p>\n Reason.<\/p>\n Discern.<\/p>\n Tell the truth.<\/p>\n
