M<\/strong>any Christians celebrate Pentecost<\/strong> as the birthday of the Church \u2014 when the Holy Spirit descended upon the believers in Acts 2<\/strong>. But what is often forgotten is that Pentecost is deeply rooted in Jewish tradition and prophecy. Understanding these roots enriches our appreciation of what God did then \u2014 and what He is doing now.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Feast of Weeks: Shavuot<\/span><\/h2>\n

Pentecost is the Greek name for the Feast of Weeks<\/em>, or Shavuot<\/strong> in Hebrew. It falls 50 days after Passover<\/strong> (hence the name Pentecost<\/em>, meaning \u201cfiftieth\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n

Originally, it was an agricultural feast, thanking God for the firstfruits of the wheat harvest<\/strong>:<\/span>

The city was filled with Jews from every nation:<\/span>

+ Jeremiah 31:33<\/strong><\/span>
+ 2 Corinthians 3:3<\/strong> (\u201c\u2026written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.\u201d)<\/span><\/p>\n

On the day of firstfruits<\/strong>, God gave the firstfruits of the Spirit<\/strong>:<\/span>
